Bullet Points Post

I know it’s been a few days since I last posted :( I’m sorry!! It’s been a weird past few days (I blame it on the full moon). So I thought I’d do some bullet points just to play catch up!
  • My interview with the Diabetes Resource Page has been put on their website :) You can find it here.
  • I did my Big Blue Test today. And I tell you what, the Just Dance games for the Wii are highly effective.
  • I saw the new Footloose movie and thought it was awesome. They did a really good job at honoring the original 1984 version while modernizing it at the same time
  • Look what my grandmother found:
This was my very first pump! I think I was in Middle School. It’s a Disetronic H-Tron! They did a newspaper article on me because our little town had never seen anything like this before.
  • Luke tried to eat Philip the Dexcom :( Phil still works (thank goodness) but is severely battered & bruised. And I’ll have to pay $200 to replace the poor guy. Looks like I’m stuck with him for a little while.
  • Luke has also eaten my phone, my digital camera, my shoes, my hairbrush, & the handle of the can-opener. To name a few things.
  • I uploaded my picture for the One Day On Earth Project (#diabetes111111) did you?
  • I also received my copy of The Book of Better Friday. Look for a review post either tomorrow or Tuesday. That’s one post I’m very very excited to write!!!
  • Also this week I’m going to interview Aaron on what it’s like being a spouse of a diabetic. It’s an idea I got from Sysy at A Girl’s Guide to Diabetes. Looking really forward to that post as well :)
That’s about it for now. I’m having serious writer’s block today, grrr. Oh don’t forget tomorrow is World Diabetes Day.  So do The Big Blue Test, make sure to get your World Diabetes Exchange Postcard in the mail, and of course: WEAR BLUE!!!

My 'beetus doesn't like stomach bugs

Aaron & I always laugh at those Wilford Brimley commercials where he talks about his ‘dia-beet-us’!! It drives me crazy (the kind of crazy where I roll my eyes but still giggle a little). Like when my cousin still asks me if I’ve taken my ‘sugar pill’ no matter how many times I’ve told her I’m on insulin. Haha!

This weekend I remembered how much my ‘beetus does NOT like it when I’m sick. My numbers were rollercoaster-ing all weekend & I”m still having some trouble honing them in.

Being sick with diabetes is so much more work. If I’m nauseous I have to think ‘is it the high blood sugar or the bug?’ If I have crackers & sprite I have to think ‘should I do a full bolus? what if i puke later?’ Ugh!!  But that’s why I haven’t posted in a few days. ‘Beetus & I were fighting the stomach bug that seems to be going around our little town.
All is better now though!!! :) & I have some good news:

My letter to the editor that I wrote about Diabetes Awareness Month & World Diabetes Day ran in our local paper yesterday!! I’m not sure about the title they gave it but I digress. You can read my letter here!!  I’m so excited, I know it’s not much but it’s still helping to raise awareness about Diabetes & some of the things going on this month.
I also got my postcard out in the mail for the World Diabetes Day Postcard Exchange.

Had to represent good ol’ NC bay-bay!!! :) Can’t wait to receive mine in the mail hopefully soon!!!

Never in my life have I been so involved in the Diabetes Community & I really wish I would have started sooner. I’m meeting a ton of great new people, getting a lot of support from people who know what I’m going through, & really feeling like I’m making a difference.  Even if it’s just a small one.

It’s time for me to show my diabetes whose boss.  I’m in control of this disease not the other way around.  I can show others & myself that diabetes doesn’t always have to be bad.

It appears all the bones, walking, playing with ropes & squeaky balls have left Luke in a ‘oh isn’t life as a dog hard’ pose. Because we don’t spoil him at all you know.  ;)

There's more to me than diabetes

So I thought I’d do a photo post just to show a few a things that make me who I am that don’t include diabetes. Because while diabetes is a flipping HUGE part of who I am, it’s not the only part.

1. I’m a little goofy.  I definitely don’t take myself too seriously.

2. I play a little guitar & a little fiddle.  Just enough to get by :)

3. This was my first 5k. I’ve done two. I really want to do a 10k next & just keep working my way up!

4. I love my crazy black lab Luke. He’s awesome.

5. It’s been 4.5 years since my wedding…& I’m still not too sure which way the ‘C’ goes when doing the Y-M-C-A.

6. I am big into music. Like BIG. It’s a big part in the way I express myself. This was at Merlefest last year where we got to meet Scythian. They’re totally amazing!

7. I LOVE living in the mountains. They’re the place to be.

8. My nephews [1 not pictured] are freaking awesome & they consider me ‘cool aunt sammy’.

9. & lastly, this man completes me & I will love him for the rest of my life. [cheeziness is invalid here].

First DSMA

Well I have good news!!! The 'Letter to the Editor' I wrote to my local newspaper about National Diabetes Month & WDD will actually run in the paper on Monday!! I'm so excited I just got an email from them this morning. So yay!! While it's just my local newspaper it's still something to help get the word out about what's going on this month. I also sent the same letter to my local news station & my neighboring county's paper but I have yet to hear back from them. (But I'll keep you posted :])

I'm also currently listening to "DSMA Live" hosted by DiabetesSocMed. I've never listened in before & honestly I just found out about it a few days ago, & it's so great!!! Tonight they're talking with Laura Kolodjeski of Sanofi US diabetes about branching out to the DOC & how to link the patient's to the company. (At least that's what I'm getting out of it :])

But again it's really really neat & I'm really enjoying listening to the questions and answers and getting insight on both sides.

This post is short tonight. I not only have an 8 month old puppy staring at me saying 'play with my play with me!!' but I'm also super tired!!! Ugh it's been one of those days. But shall I quote Scarlett O'Hara:

'After all, tomorrow is another day'.  :)

New Home or Not New Home?

So in honor of Diabetes Awareness Month I gave my little batman figure I have at work (I think my mom gave it to me a long time ago) a blue cape for the month!!

I've put him on my calculator for now until I find a more suitable spot for him :) I'm trying to do a lot to get my office involved this month. My boss also let me hang up the Blue Friday's flyer to try & get my co-workers to participate in wearing blue every Friday in November & on World Diabetes Day (11/14/11) to raise Diabetes Awareness.

Not the best picture & I had to color it because we only have black & white printers at work. This is most I've ever been involved in anything Diabetes (& I've had this disease since 1995!!!) so I'm really really excited. I've even written a letter to my local newspaper & news station.

I also wonder if I should move my blog over to (LAAT1 at Wordpress). The thought just popped in my head today. I'm not sure if I'll do it yet, but I do almost have it all set up over there to go for it. Anyone know how much it is to get my own domain from Blogger?

I'm really ready to try to take Life, as a Type 1 to the next level. Get a little more professional, a little more involved, etc. I'm also trying to come up with a posting schedule so hopefully when I have readers they'll know exactly when I'm going to be updating & putting new posts up.

I have so many ideas in my head & I'm so ready to my little blog to grow!! :)

So what is YOUR opinion. Blogger or Wordpress??

............Oh & here's a picture of Luke because c'mon, who doesn't love Luke!!

"Get off the computer & come play with me and green squeaky ball!! C'mon c'mon c'mon!!!"

My Dear Not-Yet-Conceived Baby...

Dear Baby,
I know we haven't even got you cookin' in the oven yet so some people may think this is weird but I wanted to get some stuff out of my head and on to paper (even though technically this is not paper).

I've been ready for you for a couple years now I guess but my blood sugars weren't under enough control & your daddy wasn't ready to have a baby quite yet. So I've been waiting. And recently we just bought our first home (you're going to love it, it's cozy & has plenty of room for you to crawl & run). This was one of your dad's pre-reqs to start trying for you. He did not want to be renting he wanted to own our home. Which is understandable.
His other 2 pre-reqs was that we have a fur baby before a real one. Well we've got a 7 month old black lab thinking he owns our new house lol. You'll love him. He's so friendly & great with kids & will just let you hang on his neck and love him.

The last one was that I get my blood sugars under control & get 'okays' from all my doctors. Well my numbers have been under tight control these past few weeks. I've gotten my stamp of approval from the eye dr & my endo. So that leaves my family dr & maybe my dentist. I don't really need the dentists approval as much as I just need a cleaning before you decide to make home in my belly. And I've technically already got my stamp from my OB. He just wanted my A1C to be super close to 6.0% & let me tell you I am working my tail off to get it there.

I've already got so many ideas for you in my head. Everything from pregnancy, to having you as a newborn & beyond. You'll learn that your mama LOVES to plan ahead. If we go on vacation I've got a packing list started at least 3-4 weeks before we leave & I'm packed DAYS before we go. I'm pretty OCD about it. Lordy I hope you don't inherit that trait from me lol.

OH but anyways the other day your dad finally told me he was ready for you. He's ready to have a baby & be a daddy. He also told me I should probably go off my birth control next month!!! I'm so excited. I hope my labs come back okay the next time I have them in a couple weeks so we can start trying for you really really soon.
I know you're not there yet but I love you so much already/anyways. I can't wait to find out you're there with me.

Your Future Mom

Has it really been a month!!!

Since I last posted on here!!! I'm sorry guys :( We still haven't gotten internet at our new house yet...Ugh.  But I went to the eye doctor the other day & she said everything looks great!! I have just a small touch of retinopathy but she said it's nothing to worry about, there's no bleeds, and that it's just because I've had diabetes for so many years.

So that was good because at first I freaked out. She also told me my eyes were plenty healthy enough for pregnancy :) Went to my endocronologist yesterday and my a1c is 7.7%. That's down 1% in a month!!! Which means just another 1.5ish % to go and I'll be baby-making ready!!

She also said she is going to write a letter to my insurance asking them to pay for a Dexcom for me in full!!! Even if they don't pay in full I can't wait to get it & I think it's awesome that my doctor would do that for me :)

There's so much more I need to catch up on but unfortunately I really have to go right now. Lot's to do this Saturday which is weird.

Will post again soon!!!
